New Zealand, Day 15 (Aug. 16th), Keri Keri, Ranbow Falls, Wharepuke Falls, Auckland

So it was take two on the dolphin cruise.  We were really hoping to swim with the dolphins today.   Treg decided to stay behind and pack up the car so I headed out with the girls.

Bay of Islands

Maunia watching for dolphins

Yay dolphins!!  We got all suited up and ready to swim.  Our particular tour will not get in the water unless the dolphins show the initiative and want to swim with you.  The dang dolphins acted like they wanted to play then they took off and again we did not get to swim.  We were soooo bummed.

When we docked on the island, the girls and I didn't feel like hiking so Maunia took my camera and took bird pictures instead while Sierra and I shared yummy fries and chocolate cake.

This picture cracks me up...that seagull looks so funny.

When we got back on the boat, Sierra and Maunia were feeding the seagulls.  They would come take the food right out of your hands.  They wanted me to try it.  I wasn't there for the speech about how to feed the seagulls. I didn't want my fingers bit off so I grabbed a bigger piece than the girls had been using.  Just as the seagull swoops in and takes it the girls yell "no Mom, little pieces, little pieces, he'll choke" at which point the seagull flew off and did not return so they are convinced I killed the seagull.

Ever wondered what the inside of an island looks like?  Well this time we got to go through hole in the rock and I snapped a picture.  So there you have it folks, the inside of an island.

After we finished the cruise we set off for Auckland.  I kept seeing these trees on the side of the road.  I love the blossoms on them.

These yellow trees were absolutely breathtaking

I kept seeing these cows.  Oreo cows I would call them, so funny looking.
 Deceiving...we never saw a kiwi
We saw a big sign like this over the freeway that cracked us up.  "Merge like a zip"

We wanted to go to the Waitangi treaty grounds and look around but it cost lots of money...so we decided to skip it.  We did grab lunch there though.  Maunia didn't like anything at the cafe where we were so we went to a different area to get her something.  She decided she wanted a panini.  We approach the counter and the guy just ignores us.  We stand there a few minutes and he says "did you want something?"  awesome people skills this one.  We tell him she would like a cheese panini and he rolls his eyes, kind of sighs and goes to make it.  In the meantime some other lady comes behind the counter and says "I thought you were leaving"  "well, she wanted a sandwich" he says with some annoyance in his voice...Haha, ya we felt loved.  When she got her sandwich it was heart shaped...too cute..

Indoor skiing center.  Yep, the whole hill is enclosed.

Really cool store front.

There was one more hike Treg wanted to do.  The girls and I were so stinkin tired we sort of hemmed and hawed but decided if that's what he wanted to do on his next to last day we would be good sports about it.  It was such an incredible hike.  One of my favorites I think.  It was the Keri Keri River track to Rainbow Falls (sadly we didn't make it all the way to the falls)

Maunia attempting to climb a moss covered tree.  Didn't work.

Bromeliads were growing on everything

This little bird was so cute

Wharepuke Falls

The girls found some vines and wanted to try swinging on them. Sierra was concerned that she didn't know "the sound" though. "The sound?" we questioned.  "Ya the guy swinging on the vines sound"  "Oh Tarzan"  Haha

More cool mushrooms :-)...see I told you there were lots of cool mushrooms.

Sierra deciding to give the vines a go.

Waterfall in the forest
We're not sure what this sign means.  Just don't do....anything.....just to be safe!

Boredom set in and the girls resorted to making shadow puppets on the seats.

The picture does not do this tree justice.  I loved these trees so much I bought a water color painting of one in a local shop.

This is a Kauri tree. It's one of the largest trees in the world.  The park where it was located was closing in like 5 minutes so we zoomed in and Treg yells "hurry Maunia, jump out and get a picture!"  and we raced back out before we got locked in.  She did a pretty good job under the circumstances.

We continued on to Auckland for what would be our last night in New Zealand.  Auckland was a beautiful city but it's a big city.  It was crowded and hard to drive in.

Treg wanted to go to Mt. Eden.  We could see it but we couldn't get to it.  When we finally got to it...it was closed.  Guess we'll try tomorrow.

We told the girls they could choose where we went for dinner our last night in New Zealand.  They chose...Denny's...yes really.

After dinner we went on a driving tour of the mansions in the area, some pretty amazing places.

We got back to the hotel (a high rise in the city) and told the kids we had to take everything out of the car because it all needed to get packed up to go home tomorrow.  Sierra made good use of her pockets.

What exactly did she have in those pockets you may ask...well...ALL of this!  LOL
Sierra had finally tired of sleeping in beds with her sister and opted to line the couch cushions up on the floor and sleep on them instead.  Not the most comfortable of beds but the better alternative I guess.  Tomorrow we tour Auckland then head back to the good old US.
